Running Away

Jan 17, 2009

Earlier today, discovered that the computer had eaten some of the rewrite.  Not a lot, maybe four pages, maybe less.  Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem, because I make a hard copy of everything, a lot, trees die, lots of them.  So, I decided I would be more ecologically friendly and edit on screen.  Fine, but I also didn’t want to hard copy so much.  That’s been fine until today when a hard print out would have allowed me to simply recopy, instead I will have to recreate.  It just seemed all too much.  I needed a break, really, needed a break.

First off, a business meeting we’d had scheduled got canceled and suddenly Jon and I were free for the afternoon.  Normally, this would be time to crack the whip again, but I’d had it.  We went out to lunch, just the two of us.  We took our Jenny Craig salad dressing, split the salad, and split an appetizer.  It was really nice to get out of the house and away from my desk.  I really planned to go back after lunch, but I had an opportunity to go shopping with my friend Pili, and I took it.  Even though there was some miscommunication, and I had left the store as she pulled up, and she called me on the cell, and I turned around, and we did manage to shop.  New jeans, a new leather jacket, new belt, and some other stuff.  But it was mostly about socializing and visiting.  I finally get the reason girls shop in groups, it’s not about the clothes, or whatever, it’s about being with friends.  The work schedule of late has finally made almost anything away from the desk a wonderful thing.  My mother-in-law was trying to figure out how to take Trinity shopping for a dress for a dance coming up, when she had other obligations, I said, I’d take her.  When she got home from school, she and I went out shopping for her.  I hate to shop, normally, and Trinity and I have a very different attitude towards shopping, so it doesn’t always go smoothly, but today was great.  I didn’t want to go back to work.  That pressure to hurry and get back was gone.  I was content to shop with the kiddo, and to look at the sales.  I think this may be the first time in my life that I’ve enjoyed anything shopping related.  I shop like a guy.  Know your goal, go straight for your goal, get it, and get out.  Today I wandered, first with Pili, then with Trinity.  It was a very girl bonding sort of afternoon and early evening.  Now Trin is off with her father, and Jon and I are left to our own devices.  We just got back from my Writing Group’s Party, where I finally got the presents I was absent for last month.  I left without remembering all their presents.  So, we’ve decided that if we all just give presents each month that we could have Christmas half the year.  Next month is my turn.

We watched part of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog DVD, the special features.  Much laughter, and merriment later, and we are back home.  Safe, sound, and no longer outside in the coldest night of the year, so far.  Hopefully, tomorrow I will feel refreshed, and can make more progress on the book.  But tonight, is for sleep, and cuddling under lots of warm blankets and wrapping warm husbands around you.  Stay warm.
