Sucker Punch Spoiler Thread Replies

Sep 01, 2020

Spoiler alert, I am about to spoil most of the plot of Sucker Punch in the comments below. If you have not read the book please don’t read them. I am responding to the spoiler thread, but my reply got too long for Facebook and Instagram. Thanks again to all of you that responded with such enthusiasm and so many comments that I couldn’t respond to them all, so here are some of the highlights that I gleaned from your discussion.

Is this the last Anita book? Of course not. This rumor seems to circulate after every book, though I’m not sure why, so let me reassure everyone there will be many more books to come.

Also, to the people that have started saying the last book will be the big wedding between Anita and Jean-Claude: absolutely not.  Neither I, Anita, or any of the people she loves believe in happily-ever-after being the end of the story.  Happily-ever-after is the beginning of true love, not the end.  And for some of you speculating that Olaf would interrupt the wedding with Jean-Claude, why would he do that? He doesn’t want to marry Anita, just have something similar with her that he thinks Edward has with her, more like a sword mate in the ancient tradition. Also, if anyone thinks that Anita marrying Jean-Claude is suddenly going to make them both monogamous, so Olaf would have lost his chance to bed Anita, um no.  Anita and Jean-Claude are both polyamorous, that’s not going to change.

Olaf – I really thought we were going to get to kill him off in the last book, Serpentine, but that part of the plot never materialized, so he got another book, but I always think every book is his last.  He surprised, both Anita and me in this one. Shocked Edward, too, which isn’t that easy to do. At this time I’m not planning on ever having Anita and he have sex, but I’ve had bet good money that Anita would not have kissed him voluntarily ever again, so I’ve taken my bets off this table. I agree with those that think that Olaf would kill her before he’d become her Bride. I do think that this weird new dimension of character growth between Anita and Olaf will continue at least long enough for him to come to St. Louis is try to figure out how the other people in Anita’s life work.  Olaf is intelligent, except emotionally, so I can see him wanting to come and ask questions of the other men and maybe women in her life.  I’d like to see his lion form before he dies. I’d sort of like Olaf to go with Anita and Edward on Peter’s first hunt, along with Bernardo.

The kiss – A lot of you were horrified, or intrigued, or just confused by the fact that Anita and Olaf actually shared a kiss. I tried to write that scene differently several times, but the book stalled and would not go like a car that had run out of gas.  I’ve learned that when that happens it means that the characters, the plot, my muse have decided that this scene needs to be in the book. Sometimes I write the scene and then delete it later, but most of the time the muse is right and the scene stays. Yes, it bothered both me and Anita, too.

Edward testing inconclusive for Therianthropy. Sorry, I’m not going to answer any of your questions, you’ll just have to see how it plays out. It’s too big a potential plot twist to give it all away here. Sorry, not sorry. I will say I didn’t see it coming and wrote it out, then put it back twice. I know what it means and where we’re going with it.

I’ll agree with everyone who liked seeing Nicky talk to Olaf.  It was fun. Glad so many of you enjoyed the poly discussion near the end with the bigger cast.  I enjoyed writing the scenes as much as you enjoyed reading it.

A few of you said that Anita was weak and not bad ass for calling in Edward for help with Olaf. First, it is not a sign of weakness to ask for help when you need/want it. Second, if Anita had just shot Olaf dead early in the book then she’d have been arrested and trying to solve the book’s mystery would have stopped. It would have become a book about Anita having destroyed her life to kill Olaf. If you’ve missed it, Anita is not the most subtle person, if we have to kill Olaf in the future we need Edward with us to ensure that we have a chance of not going to jail or getting executed for it. Anita needed Edward there not just backup and potential protection  but for planning how to do the deed and not get caught.

A couple of you said the mystery was too easy to solve and too obvious, because you solved it in the first half of the book.  Well, good for you, because you were ahead of me. I honestly originally had Leduc down as the murderer.  It was one reason that I made Hanuman, Michigan a fictional town, because if the cops are the bad guys then I will not intentionally besmirch a real police force. Turns out he wasn’t it, but good on the handful of you that say you saw through my plot and solved it before I even knew it was Jocelyn. I thought Sheriff Leduc and Deputy Rico were both in on it, as it turned out Rico was still a bad guy, but his partner in crime changed completely. Jocelyn was originally supposed to be a red herring.

A few more of you complained on how much dialogue and soul searching Anita does in the book.  Anita overthinks things, because I overthink things. Also, every serious relationship I’ve ever been in has required a great deal of communication in real life, in fact the fictional discussions aren’t nearly as complicated and long as some real life poly talks. It’s one of the serious downsides to my chosen sexual orientation.  Yes, it’s trying, but totally worth it when it works.

Some of you are thrilled that there was no sex and all mystery. Others of you missed the sex and loved the mystery.  A few of you missed Jean-Claude, Micah, Nathaniel and the others, and would have chucked the mystery to see more poly couple time. Still others of you were happy not to have them on stage this book. Some of you were cafeteria style and picked a little from several choices above. As a writer and as a person you cannot please everyone, so in the end please yourself, or let the book be what the book wants to be, because I was not happy with the ending.

I’d originally planned to save Bobby, and then we got to the end – twice.  I tried to save him a different way and the book stopped dead in it’s tracks. I cried, if it’s any comfort. But I finally realized that this book wasn’t just about the injustice of the execution system, but about why the execution warrants exist in the first place.  Bobby proved just how dangerous he was at the end.

A few of you thought that Jocelyn enraged Bobby by accusing Rico of raping her, no. Bobby smelled them on each other and then she told him the truth about their affair and the murder and framing him. The plan was for Rico to shoot Bobby trying to bend the bars and escape after Jocelyn enraged him up, but Rico got too close and Bobby decided he wanted to kill Rico more than he wanted to escape. There’s a reason you’re not allowed to stand within paw reach of the cages at the zoo.

  1. I thought it was just what it needed to be. Did I miss certain people, well yes, but they would not have fit in the story.
I have never been disappointed in one of your books. Thank you for giving me book characters I love.

    1. I agree with you, it was what it needed to be. I missed the action buttkicking zombi wrangling. I do feel Anita needed time away to see and think about things away from the group. I also feel she has gotten ahold of her gifts and can manage them better. This book i feel is the bridge to her future. This book was needed for Laurell and Anita if that makes sense.

      1. I love that you stay true to your characters and your muse. I was surprised there was no sex but honestly with Olaf around who is in the mood anyway.

    2. It amazes me that anyone has the gall to criticize any writer. It takes a lot more self discipline and creativity than I have! The fact that you can keep your characters fresh and doing new things for this many books is fantastic! Do I like some more than others? Of course! But each one leads into the next and is needed to complete the series. Keep on being you.
” To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you into someone else, is the hardest fight you will ever have. And you can never stop fighting” paraphrase from e.e cummings ?

    1. Just want to say I looove all your books I’ve reread them a million times. Your so awesome I lose myself for days reading Anita Blake’s life.

  2. I loved this book! And your right real life poly talks aren’t that short, neither are scene negations, but that’s another orange. I drawn on Anita’s courage to confront her fears and learn to life her life her way. And knowing that there is a public figure who lives their life to the fullest has help me. Thanks for Anita and you as a person.

  3. I really loved this book, and I love that you take time to talk with us, readers, and that you consider your characters as real as me (sorry, I’m French, I’m not sure it’s clear). I love Anita and her crew, and sometimes it seems to me they are real people
Thank you so much for your books. You are the reason why I improved my English : to read your books as soon as possible

  4. I loved Sucker Punch. Everything about it. Each book isn’t the same, and I wouldn’t want them to be. I can’t wait for more.

  5. I loved the book. Bit to say I wouldn’t live more Jean Claude in every book- but your books always leave me eagerly waiting for the next one.

    1. I loved the book. I have loved Anita and the rest from the beginning. The only open question I had was how did Anita get out of STL without any bodyguards or food.

      1. I love Anita too and all her lovers! Sure I wanted all of them in it but I can wait! I think there will come a time when Anita has to look at her feeling for The Lion! Can’t wait to see where that goes! Carry on Laurell! Please don’t wait another 2 years for the next one !!

  6. Is there still going to be another Merry Gentry book? I have always loved those characters and really hope to read more of them. Please let fans know if the book series is at an end or more coming. It being like 5 years since the last one I am leading to the sad conclusion that they are at an end.

  7. Laurell,
Please ignore those critics that are nothing but folks who love to be a PIA to others. You wrote the book as Anita told you to. If they don’t like it, they don’t have to read it. I love it as it was written, the interaction between Olaf and Anita I felt was a plot for a future store for a book. As far as Anita calling Edward in, well she did what she felt necessary. I mean she called Micha as well and he sent support for her. So why can she not call Edward for more. People are going to complain no matter what you write. Just please don’t give up with Anita, I am so invested in the books I go back and re-read like many others do.
Love the books and love your writing style. Keep being who you are. *HUGS*

  8. I loved the book..I always do..I don’t know what I want..I think I do, then you write it and WOW…great..keep surprising us..love them all..but maybe a little more of her loves next time..missed them!!

  9. Laurall, Thank you for writing such complicated and intriguing characters. I like the fact that Anita spends so much time thinking and overthinking (I do it as well). As a writer it must be difficult to balance the story and all of your fans wants and needs for the characters. I love all of your books but confess the ones with more mystery, myth, legend, murder, and mayhem make me happy. The amount of research boggles the mind! I am a selfish fan and reader and want more, just more. You can’t write fast enough for me. Life isn’t easy and I love escaping into your books/stories. Keep doing what you do, and I’ll keep buying and reading.

  10. Thank you for the insight in how your muse has a mind if it’s own. You try one way, but end up the opposite way. My daughter is enjoying writing fan fiction and stalls when she thinks something has to be a certain way. I have tried to explain that some story lines have a different path to take she just needs to hold on and let it go where it wants to go.

  11. Thank you for this. It kills me a little inside when I read the unhappiness about your books. Keeping charactors alive for this long is an amazing talent. I wait for as long as needed to enjoy your world’s and I also try to share them with as many people as possible. Happily ever after is not an ending and relationships are hard work. Anitas world should be no different.

  12. The first time I read your books i was hooked to them. The way Anita grew through the years is fascinating. The title of the book is right. You and Anita sucker punch us by changing the pace and how the story evolved. You made a crime mystery with a paranormal twist at tha end.

Looking foward for the new book.

  13. I liked this book for so many reasons. There is a mystery, soul searching & many surprises. This is your story, I don’t believe I have the right to complain or demand changes. I can miss people or not like people & wish Olaf would get sent on a snipe hunt for a few books. ?
Thank you for your books! Thank you for your humanity & compassion in your posts!

  14. I don’t what you write, I love it all, and will continue to buy it. Sad about Bobby, though.

  15. I thought this book had a really great mix of items. Yes, it didn’t have as much sex as the other books but I liked the change of pace and the more intense focus on the mystery and working through things with Olaf. Personally I think you set up a lot of things for future books with this one. Blessings on you and your household and thank you ever so much for filling our lives with your vivid words. Your characters have become friends, just as a side note as I was rereading Kiss of Shadows I thought Nathaniel and Galen would have made great friends with each other.

  16. I loved the book. I live ALL the books. Thank you for giving us such a lush fantasy world to escape to for a short while.

  17. I loved the book but wish Anita and Edward go back to fighting the bad guys more like your first books. I think Anita is getting to soft now. Can’t wait for the new one.

    1. Where is Merry? I love the Anita series too, but I miss Merry. I thought it was Leduc as well, until the first scene with Jocelyn in the hospital, then I knew it was her. Rico was the twist for me. I think Olaf shouldn’t be killed off, maybe let Anita roll him feeding the arduer, however you spell it, or become her Lion to call, not a bride but in check kind of? Either way, thank you for your work!! I’ve read all of your books, and will read anything you write in the future, hopefully a Merry Gentry book 😉

  18. Love hearing about your thoughts and process almost as much as the book. Maybe yo should do this after every one ?. Keep writing…please…and even though I LOVE Anita I have to put in a plea for Merry to start talking to you again. Miss her

  19. Thank you for the beauty of your writing. I always love the stories, regardless of whether I agree with what happens or not. I really loved the way Olaf fixes things where Jocelyn is concerned. As creepy as it sounds, it made me smile evilly and made the ending more palatable than it would have been otherwise.

  20. All of this I pretty much had figured out. It all made sense to me, except . . . Why was Anita not relying on her physic connections? Why was she loosing control? Why wasn’t Edward reminding her to eat? Why did she seem to be resistant to feeding? Whether human food or otherwise. It just seemed she was floundering. Very un-Anita like. Otherwise, I enjoyed the book. Found it a very interesting metaphor for what is actually happening in society today.

  21. I am really satiated with this book. I’m glad Olaf is still around. I never thought he’d slip up and get killed, but I did think he’d fade away and we’d never learn anything non-mechanical about him. I’m glad he’s getting curious but since he’s a serial killer maniac I am fearful for Anita’s brood. Hope his curiosity doesn’t turn obsessive and homicidal toward them. I liked reading the poly discussion and learned from it. Edward reminds me if a friend and every time I read about him it makes me laugh at how parallel they are. Thanks for the new memories… love it! 🙂

  22. I love this response.

I also overthink things and it comes out in my writing. I was told once by a reader that she thought the writing/inner mind of my main character was chaotic and like Speedy Gonzales on speed – and then she met me and it all clicked! Lol.

That being said, I really did enjoy this book. I’m so excited for more in the future. You’ve been my favorite author ever since I picked up a novel in 2008.

Your writing has helped me grow and become more secure in myself and what I enjoy. From accepting my homosexuality / polyamorousness (is that even a word?) to accepting other things. So I thank you.

  23. I adored this book. It was like another of my top faves, Obsidian Butterfly, with all the mystery and Edward. Did I mention the Edward? Lol. I loved getting the team back together. And yes, I cried at the end when Bobby died but it really does add more depth to the problem. How do we give supernaturals a chance at fair justice and keep the mundanes safe? Where is the middle ground? I’m worried about Anita being under investigation and you can see her burnout coming on in my opinion. How many times and for how long can you be the Executioner before you can’t deal anymore? It’s one thing to hunt a killer, to fight for your life, I think and another to shoot fish in a barrel so to speak. Or in this case a cage, chained up, person begging for their life who may or may not have done the crime condemning them to death. I’ve grown with Anita and her people. Learned what I think are real life lessons and seriously look forward to diving back into her world every time. Though, not going to sugar coat it, I want me some more Jean-Claude cause I’m trash for Jean-Claude. 🙂 So, thank you so much for this book and this world. You are a gift and so is Anita.

  24. Laurell, it was an amazing masterpiece. The entire series is. You’ve actually replaced Stephen King as the first name out of my mouth when discussing favorite authors. I put you and King above myself on that list. The book was perfect, they always are. So, now I’m going to go read it a second time through before I return it to the library. Much love and blessed be.

“The world of Anita Blake sucks me in so completely. Like nothing I’ve ever read before. Laurell K Hamilton is a true virtuoso.”
~Terri Logue – author The Farmhouse

  25. I loved Sucker Punch – it did have a different type of ending – a non-happily ever after but your books are terrific. I just need a refresher on why Anita could not reanimate Uncle Hal? What happens when a murder victim is reanimated?

  26. I love that you allow your books to write themselves even if it turns out the plot doesn’t go the way you originally planned. I think that’s what keeps the characters real.

  27. So many thoughts on this one, but all good. It was nice to return to the “nuts & bolts” of Anita’s life and have the mystery, and a bit of a reprieve from relationships (other than with Olaf). That said, I did miss some of my favorite characters, but I know that by now all of the characters are pretty real and independent in your head, and can demand things of you; I admire that you do what your muse wants, as it really makes your worlds so, well, REAL!
I loved the mystery, and I was surprised by the outcome, and was sad for how it turns out. Hopefully, the discussion about the warrant system and the laws gets investigated in future books, as that angle has always fascinated me. I am in awe of how complex your worlds are, and it boggles the mind as to how much research you put in to every thread of the stories, as that is what sets you apart from almost every other author, and makes you my #1 favorite author! (You’re one of only 2 authors that I collect both the hardback and the e-book of EVERY book you write!)
I was so intrigued by the interaction with Olaf. He is not one of my favorites, but stands out as one of the most complex characters you write, as he is so drastically different from everyone else, which makes Anita and the crew grow and stretch their boundaries. I loved the discussion Anita’s people had with Olaf, and how he genuinely seemed to be interested in the mechanics of possibly sharing Anita with the group in some way. That said, I don’t think I will ever be able to stand them actually being together, but I’ve said that about some of the things you write, and you’re always right in the end! 🙂
In all, thank you for writing something so complex and absorbing. Every time I pick up one of your books, no matter how many times I’ve read it, I find something new and intriguing to think about. Your worlds are so intricate, I seriously get lost for hours, both in the actual reading and then thinking about the story while doing other tasks. (I’ve actually lost track of what I was doing when I get deep in thought about a particular thread I am pondering. My husband found me staring out the window, a plate in my hand dripping soapy water on the floor after I finished Sucker Punch…I had gotten lost again in pondering something!) 😉
Thank you for every book. Don’t let the complaints get to you…I think there are far more that are solidly in the “she knows exactly what to do” camp! Many Blessings to you and your muse, and may the Gods shine on you and your family (who are incredibly awesome for sharing you with your characters and fans!) <3

  28. I wish I had discovered your books sooner! They have helped me get through some very difficult times. Anita and company have become more than just characters in a book. They have become friends that I can count on and that in and of itself is priceless. I thank you.

  29. I honestly loved the book and it was a joy to see more of her doing what she does best. I missed the sex but eh, we’ve had loads of that in the last 7 books.
I actually liked the thing with Olaf and giggled my ass off at the kiss, like a teenager having boy talk lol.
I cant wait to see what happens with Edward! I love him so much. I was sad about Bobby but i knew it was going to come to that, sometimes you just cant save everybody.
I loved seeing more of Nicky.
I miss Jason, j hope we get to see more of him soon.

  30. I want something HUGE to happen so that the ardeur is unleashed and Olaf is the main course. (in all possible ways) Maybe this time a bride on purpose instead of accident. Then we can keep him around without him killing Anita or those she loves.

  31. I enjoyed reading this book as much if not more than all of your books! The one thing that threw me about this story was that at the start, when we learned that she was on assignment in Wisconsin, I was surprised that she was there alone, no bodyguards. I found it hard to believe that she would go out of state without a single guard. (Or that J.C. would allow it.) Other than that small issue, I completely lost myself in your world. Keep pumping them out as only you can! Love you! Blessed Be!

  32. I thought it was just what it needed to be. It took me back to before all the love interests. I will say i do miss Anita raising the dead. Thank the powers that be that this iznt the last book because it would suck for it to end like that. Though i would love for Anita to have another mystery right at home. I love reading and being able to picture where she is when she is driving down St. Louis streets. I live across the river and it just hits me in my happy place. Thank you for the years of exceptional diversion therapy.

  33. Loved the book! I understand the need to venture into different aspects of Anita’s life and truly enjoy the fact you allow us to see and experience it all. Not just one facet of who she is. This showed so much of the internal conflict that people choose not to acknowledge but actually happens. Thank you for continuing to be a conduit for such growth and diversity of environment and experience in Anita’s llife. Thank you for sharing!!!

  34. Thank you for clearing up a few things.

The one you left out and most important for me was her eyes shifting to kitty. It is not the same as when they shift from the power she got from obsidian butterfly “vampire”. When did this happen?

  35. I won’t lie – I really enjoyed the book right up til Bobby was killed off. I like my fantasy a little less realistic. That said, thank you so much for giving us your reasons. Your thoughts on why Bobby had to be killed off helped me understand & I hate the ending just a little bit less. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us!!

  36. I enjoyed the book. Thought it was just right. But I’ve never had complaints about any of the books. I always enjoy them, and the fact that Edward was in this one was just icing on the cake. He is one of my favorite characters.

  37. I’ve never written in about these books. I have loved Anita since high school (2006) I love most if not all the books I may not like the turns they take but, in the end I’m still extremely excited to find out what happens next.

I love the poly talk I hope there is another scene in later books. I love the characters that came in to help and I’m glad it was Niki and not Micha. For some reason Richard and Micha have been my least favorite characters. I’d love for characters Anita has worked with or has made appearances with will show up sometime in another book. Possibly obsidian butterfly, Zerbrowski, Wicked Truth, Demons??, the wolf or Rat King in St.louis. I love the mix of sex and mystery, blood and love . I love Anita and how strong she is and independent, but in Sucker Punch she asked for help from Edward. I wasn’t a fan of her running into his arms because that was definitely never anything Anita has done. Yes she’s changing and I don’t mind the weakness sometimes I think she could give a little more here or there and still be strong.

Ps I miss Mary and her boys and the babies

  38. I just finished the book. I still dislike Olaf. I kept waiting for some reveal about Leduc’s son. I honestly thought it would be revealed he also went on that same safari trip. So unless I missed something.

But Edward, damn I will be looking forward to that.

  39. I just finished the book. I still dislike Olaf.

I kept waiting for some reveal about Leduc’s son. I honestly thought it would be revealed he also went on that same safari trip. Perhaps I missed something.

But Edward, damn I will be looking forward to that.

  40. It was perfect as is, and is probably how it was always meant to be. the sleuthing parts are always my favorite, so I won’t say I was sad that there was more, but at this point, I am invested in ALL of the characters and when they are absent, they are missed. however, it just makes it better to see them in the next adventure! thanks to you and your muse for continuing Anita’s story!

  41. I liked it. A lot. As with a few other books, it felt like something got left out, but as with most, I didn’t need whatever was missing, it was just a … Weird echo…in the back of my skull. But you, as the writer, with a head full of people/characters trying to tell you their ideas and stories, you have to be the one that deals with whatever lingering issues they leave you when you put the lines on the paper. It’s never going to be perfect. But as long as when you walk away, the voices in your head are for a moment subdued with your route, then it was a success. I love them all even if it’s not always every detail I find pleasing. But that’s my issue, not yours. ??

  42. I love all of your books. My brother got me into the Anita series and he passed away waiting for Micah to come out. I know that he would still love to read the series and it’s a way to keep him close. We both loved the fact that, unlike a lot of other longer series, Anita’s view points actually do change and grow with her. Thank you for continuing to write an amazing series.

  43. I love this! Thank you so much for answering so many questions and giving us some insight into how the story unfolded. I loved Olaf in this book. But I love every book to be fair. I can’t wait fof Rafael!

  44. You know teenage me probably would have liked all the sex. But I’m getting older and now I just like a good story. I’ll confess I really do not want to see Olaf and Anita hook-up. The only thing I really feel bad about is that I’m going to have to wait about another year before the next Anita Blake comes out. Most of my favorite series have ended book and tv. It’s nice having something to look forward to. So thank you for the interesting story. I need to learn how to Pace it out I started reading it last night and it’s just after noon and I’m finished by lol

  45. Loved Sucker Punch ?‍♀️? I liked seeing Nicky in action. Love Edward – awesome twist. Of course miss Micah, Nathaniel & Jean Claude. Also miss zombies amok. Good mystery- Agtha Christie turns. Thank you for following muse.
Olaf- the kiss blew my mind. But character growth is important and hard. You do it so well.

Just preordered Rafel!! Can’t wait .

Thank you for sharing Anita (and you) with us.

    Be well .

  46. Finally finished! I really liked this latest book – I loved that it focused on the mystery/crime and showed how the monsters are often in the mirror with no supernatural powers. I think this book also shows that enough time has past that having vampires and shapeshifters, etc. is normal enough that people it is “normal” to take them into account when plotting a crime. Not sure I am saying that well.

Here is the one big thing I wanted to respond to – I think Olaf doing what he did to Jocelyn? I think he wanted Anita to be proud of him. He knew they all thought Jocelyn getting away with it was wrong. He could not only keep his promises to Edward and Anita but also do what they could not – bring justice. I love that Ms. Hamilton made this choice – its true to the characters and moves the plot in a very interesting way. Olaf is actually trying. Not what I expected at all. Thanks

  47. I always try to make your books last as long as possible, cause they always end sooner than I want, which is a compliment. But once again, I sat down to read a little and got caught…4 hours later and I’ve finished another amazing book.

I thought it was amazing. Yes, I missed characters but Anita’s life is a busy, crazy thing. We will never see everyone we want or see her do everything we want in a single book, and I’m ok with that. It means more books and to me makes it almost real.

You have been, and still continue to be, my favorite author. Amazing job once again.
